The Maranatha Mustangs girls basketball team has reached the midway point of the season with momentum firmly on its side. The Mustangs boast a perfect 3-0 record in Skyline Conference play and an impressive 10-2 mark overall, placing them atop the conference standings and second in Section 5AA.
A major highlight of the past month has been the milestone achievements of two Mustangs standouts, as Maranatha celebrated not one, but two 1,000-point scorers in a span of just a few weeks. Senior Heather Sheehy reached the career milestone on December 12, scoring 16 points in a dominant 80-21 victory over Concordia Academy. Less than a month later, Olivia Lanari joined the exclusive club, pouring in 26 points during a 67-52 road win over Tartan on January 2 to eclipse 1,000 career points of her own.
The Mustangs face a pair of important road tests this week as they continue to build toward the heart of the season. Maranatha will travel to St. Croix Preparatory Academy on Wednesday, January 7, before heading to United Christian Academy on Thursday, January 8. Those games will serve as a lead-in to a demanding stretch of 11 consecutive Skyline Conference matchups.
With strong senior leadership, balanced scoring, and growing confidence, the Mustangs are well-positioned for a strong finish. As conference play intensifies, look for Maranatha to continue building on its success while making another push for a Skyline Conference championship, led by the steady play of Olivia Lanari and Heather Sheehy.
