Mustangs Finish Second in Section 5A

soccer

The Mustangs defeated Cristo Rey in the Section 5A semifinals to advance to the championship for the third straight season. Maranatha traveled to Fridley on Tuesday, October 15 to take on a well coached #5 seed team who had upset #1 seed Hope Academy the previous week.

The Tigers controlled the ball most of the first half on the Mustangs side of the field and were able to put two balls in the back on the net to take a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

The Mustangs made some adjustments and put pressure on the Tigers defense in the second half. Fridley fought off several good opportunities for the Mustangs to score, including a couple of corner kicks late in the game. Maranatha gave it a great effort to comeback but were unsuccessful as the Fridley Tigers would get the win by a score of 2-0 and advance to the MSHSL Class A State Tournament.

Maranatha finished the season with a record of 8-10-1. The Mustangs will graduate five seniors who played key roles this past season. Look for Maranatha to continue to build the boys soccer program and make an attempt next season to continue their streak of advancing to the section championship game.
