The Mustangs are coming off a solid season from a year ago, where they finished with an overall record of 16-11. They have zero seniors on the roster, but plenty of talent, and the girls are determined to have another successful year.
Coach Faith Johnson Patterson is back for her second season as head coach at Maranatha and has the girls heading in the right direction early on in the season.
Maranatha stepped on the court in from of a home crowd for their season opener against a Princeton team that already had logged three games with a record of 2-1. The Mustangs put pressure on the Tigers right away with their tough defense and ability to move the ball up the court and score quickly.
Maranatha jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back. They went into halftime with a 43-25 lead. The Mustangs came out in the second half and continued to play with a purpose. It was easy to see that the girls were conditioned to play at a high level as they repeatedly beat the press and got everyone involved in the offense. Maranatha got their first win of the season against the Tigers from Princeton by a score of 79-57.
The Mustangs had four players score in double digits. They were led by Zaniah Hunter with 24 points, followed by Olivia Lanari and Heather Sheehy with 15 points each, and Greta Eaves putting up 10 points.
The 1-0 Maranatha Mustangs head out on the road on Thursday, December 5, to take on a Watertown-Mayer team that is 2-0 with wins over Belle Plaine and Holy Family. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm and will be live streamed at Watertown Mayer LiveStreaming.
